Recently, I watched a play done by one actress called "Fires in in the Mirror," and I think you might find it very interesting. It deals with racial unrest in both the Jewish community and black community in Crown Heights, New York, especially after an accidental killing of a young black child which also resulted in the death of a Jewish man in retaliation. You and I both know that honestly.. this isn't a shocking new topic. Anti-semitic views are still on the uprise with Neo-Nazism, and anti-black views are just as strong as they were back in the 1700s, just minus the lynching because that'll now get you a slap on the wrist by the US courts. However, it is always disheartening to see two disenfranchised groups combat each other instead of helping each other. I can't necessarily blame the black community for feeling hatred towards the Jewish community, though. They do tend to get more benefits than they do, but does that justify killing a member of that community? Not really. You and I know that. Nonetheless, heartbreaking to see deaths and riots on the screen, real or not. It only mirrors what we see in the news daily.
The actress, though, did an amazing job of being everyone at once. She went from costume to costume, voice to voice, character to character. Kind of reminded me of James McAvoy in that movie we watched together! Just like in Split, with just a change of expression and you would know exactly which character Smith was playing. Although.. I do wonder what it would be like if I was one of the few people interviewed on what had happened. I don't think I'd be much shocked, it's something you see in the news quite often, but I guess it is one thing to have it happened miles and miles away versus just a block away. I think I would have said something along the lines of not quite believing what had happened, but knowing it would one day happen right in front of me. I would have known it had been an accident, you know I'm not the type to color things in panic and hatred, but it definitely would jar me. I'd be careful to not leak bias into the account, but you and I both know that's unavoidable. I'm not sure what I would say! I hope if the time comes, and I hope it never does, I would know what to say, but I don't think anyone can prepare a testimonial for a grievous occasion like that.
Well, I hope you're doing well! Tell Jeff I said hi!
